Frequently asked questions

Sometimes it feels like we have more questions than answers. At Connection Child & Family Therapy, I am here to answer any of your questions prior to your first visit. If one of your questions isn't listed below, please reach out and I'll be happy to answer it.

What is psychotherapy?

Therapy is a partnership between an individual and a professional who is trained to help people understand their feelings, thoughts, and needs so that they can achieve the life that brings them fulfillment and joy. Psychotherapy is based upon a range of techniques and can be one-on-one or in a group or family setting.

What can I expect from therapy?

The therapist comes alongside you with guidance, support, and expertise. The goal of therapy is to make you more self-sufficient, not more dependent.

Why should I go to a therapist?

Going to a therapist can be a worthwhile growing and stabilizing experience. Therapy is valuable for times when you have specific problems, interpersonal problems, a crisis, or are generally feeling down.

Why did Dr. Essenburg get into this work?

Ever since she was a child, Dr. Essenburg has been drawn to stories of people triumphing over adversity. She has seen incredible healing of mind, body and spirit through the process of therapy.

What is typical for a first session?

The first visit is all about getting to know each other and gathering information. We focus on your goals and what you’d like to accomplish. It’s the start of a relationship that will become the foundation for working together. When working with children, the initial meeting is with both parents alone. This allows us to freely talk about your issues and concerns without your child present.

How will I know if Dr. Essenburg is the right therapist for me?

In the initial conversation, feel free to ask Dr. Essenburg any questions that help you select the right therapist. Most people have a good sense of whether the therapist is the right professional to help them within the first session.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

The length of treatment varies from one individual or family to another. The treatment is appropriately matched with the complexity of the issues or concerns. Therapy successfully ends when the patient has accomplished the goals mutually agreed upon with the therapist.

What is the length of each counseling session?

Each session is 45-50 minutes.

How often will we meet?

How often we meet depends upon the reasons that bring you in as well as your schedule. The therapist typically recommends starting weekly and reducing meetings when you experience improvement.

Is medication prescribed?

No, Dr. Essenburg is not a medical doctor. Many of her patients find medication is helpful, and many of them also progress well in therapy without medication. If you want to be evaluated for psychiatric medication, either contact your primary care physician or a psychiatrist.

Can I receive Christian counseling?

If desired, Dr. Esssenburg can offer Christian-based counseling.

Will I attend sessions with my child?

The answer depends upon why your child is coming, what we are addressing in sessions and the age of your child. Your feedback and thoughts are elicited and important regardless of your presence in sessions.
